From Us To You

You’ve heard the phrase “cleanliness is next to godliness,” right? No, it’s not in the Bible–although the earliest mention of it is from the great preacher, John Wesley. In 1791 he wrote “…cleanliness is indeed next to godliness.” That phrase popped into my mind when I was reading from 2 Timothy 3 recently. In 2 Timothy 3:12 Paul specifically talks about living a “godly life” and the persecution that will result. One would think that a godly life should mean less persecution not more, but many have seen that this is not the case.

Earlier in the chapter, Paul outlined to Timothy what worldliness looks like, and later in the chapter he explains how to avoid it. In 2 Timothy 3:16 in particular he reminds Timothy that “All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” This is why it is so important to fill our minds daily with scripture. It’s just as important to train our children up in this as well. Are there areas of your life that you need a little more cleanliness to facilitate growth in godliness? We can help.
